“Hello world, this is me…”
If you sang that in your head, we’re already going to get along 😉
I’m Léah — pronounced Lay-ah (yep, like the Star Wars princess — though sadly I haven’t mastered the hair or the lightsaber skills). I’m an amateur dressage rider based in Oxfordshire, and I’m so excited to be joining the EquiGlo ambassador team!
Unlike many riders, I didn’t grow up in a horsey family — but I was absolutely obsessed from the very start. I devoured every horse book, film, and TV show I could get my hands on and even tried to teach myself to ride through them. Eventually, after what felt like a lifetime of begging, my parents agreed to let me start lessons at a local riding school. I began riding once a month at around 10 years old, and everything grew from there.
Winnie was the first horse I ever owned — I bought her just before my GCSEs using my own savings. I used to cycle to the yard before and after school to look after her, and let’s just say I’ve been well-acquainted with early mornings ever since. We competed up to medium level with British Dressage but, like the proverb says, ‘man plans, God laughs’. She was retired from competition last summer, and I’ll forever be grateful for everything she’s taught me (and continues to teach me!). Now we’re onto a new kind of adventure: Winnie’s having a foal! I can’t wait to meet him or her this year — hopefully a mini Winnie with a little less drama and just as much charm.
These days, I split my time between my full-time job as an A-Level Business teacher and part-time freelance work riding and grooming for clients (because let’s face it — horses aren’t exactly budget-friendly…). My current youngster, Maple, has been kept ticking over thanks to the brilliant Amy Harris, who’s been riding her while I take a step back. I had an accident last year (a story for another time), followed by a fall onto concrete a few weeks ago, and years of horse life have left me a little… wonky. So right now, I’m focusing on getting stronger and more mobile again. I won’t lie, my yoga form has been described as “a dying seagull”. But hey, progress is progress.
While I’m not competing at the moment, I’m loving the slower pace and am focused on bringing Maple on steadily. She just turned four and is currently more spice than sparkle, I think she’ll be something really quite special. I’m looking forward to being back in the saddle soon, and hopefully back between the white boards later this year??
I’m genuinely proud to be working with EquiGlo. Their Quick Soak 10 Minute Beet has been a staple in our feed room for a while now, the girls love it and never leave a crumb. I’m also a big fan of their Linseed; the difference in Maple has been amazing. She’s already a far cry from the scrawny little thing I brought home a few months ago. That said, the girls would probably argue that the treat deliveries are their favourite part 😉
So whether you’re here for the dressage drama, foal pics or just sticking around to see if I ever nail my yoga poses… welcome aboard. I’m so looking forward to sharing what I’m sure will a rollercoaster of a journey.
And, if monthly updates just aren’t enough you’ll find us (and a lot more chaos) over on Instagram at @leahwdressage - come say hi!
May the horse be with you 🐴✨
